Physical Modalities

Modalities play an important role in rehabilitation practice. They are used to enhance tissue healing and to prepare the tissue for other treatments such as stretching, manual therapy, and therapeutic exercise strengthening.  However, remember, the best tools we have are our trained hands and experience using these tools.

LASER Therapy

We use class IV cold laser therapy, which involves special wavelengths of light that have been scientifically proven to bring about biological change in tissue This high-power, non-painful light energy is fast-acting and promotes tissue healing, reduces swelling, improves wound healing, and relieves pain.

Our team has extensive functional anatomy knowledge, allowing us to accurately target the affected tissues in your pet's condition to achieve better patient outcomes.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate cells, release healing growth factors, reduce inflammation and swelling, increase blood flow, and assist with bone and wound healing. This non-invasive treatment can effectively address various conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendon/ligament injuries, wounds, bone fractures, back pain, and shoulder instability.

While some pets may require short-acting, reversible sedation for this therapy, most do not. Typically, the treatment involves three sessions that are two to three weeks apart on the painful or injured tissue. The effects of Shockwave therapy are long-lasting and can serve as an alternative to pain medications, surgery, or as part of a rehabilitation program.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy

PEMF therapy is a non-drug option for pain relief that has been shown to improve healing and alleviate pain in pets. It can be applied using a handheld loop over the area of concern or with a mat that the pet rests on. These devices can be used in the home setting to relieve pain and aid in healing between sessions.

The mechanism of action involves using electromagnetic energy waves to stimulate biochemical reactions in the tissues, which helps relieve pain and inflammation. PEMF therapy can even penetrate through bone and can be used to address behavioral issues such as anxiety and dementia. This therapy is especially useful for pets with health issues that prevent them from taking long-term medications.

NMES/TENS Therapy

NMES is a tool that uses electrical impulses to stimulate muscle contraction. It can benefit pets that are too weak to build strength through traditional exercise or have nerve issues that hinder normal muscle contractions. TENS provides pain relief using lower electrical impulse setting.

Cold Compression
Therapy

Cold therapy using ice has been scientifically proven to effectively reduce pain and swelling in pets. When compression is added to the therapy, the outcomes can be even better. Our CCT sleeves are frequently used on pets that have undergone surgery or are experiencing chronic pain after a workout session to provide relief and comfort.
